It may seem like a simple question but I am here to tell you that not all infertility doctors are created equal.
Throughout our 5 plus years of infertility treatments I saw at least 8 Reproductive Endocrinologists and several surgeons. What I looked for in the beginning ended up being what I despised toward the end. When we were first starting out I went for clinics that were located in NYC as my perceived chances of success were tied directly to their success rates that I meticulously researched. I also relied heavily on whether or not I knew of others who had success with said doctors and clinics.
While looking at success rates and pregnancy rates for sure should be part of your decision making process these items alone do NOT make a great infertility doctor in my opinion.
Along with the steep rise in infertility rates clinics now more than ever care about their statistics. What this may mean for some couples whose conditions may be more complicated is lackluster care. After all couples like this may not keep their success rates where they want them to be. My issue was and continues to be the “in the box thinking” that so many clinics have. In addition, communication and results are now delivered through portals and the tiny bit of warmth you used to get through daily phone calls is gone. A cold clinical process has gotten even more so as technology continues to advance.
When I felt like the doctors I was working with were not open minded I asked around and researched as much as I could. I eventually found a clinic that was willing to try some atypical things. It wasn’t the big NYC clinics that I found multiple successes at it was the smaller, almost unheard of clinic in southern NJ. I was lucky enough to find multiple doctors at this clinic who actually listened to me and were willing to try and think out of the box.
I wish I could tell you where to go to have success but that magical place will be different for each of us. What I can tell you is that when you do find it you will know it deep inside your gut. Do not be swayed by the shiny new outside of any clinic as they will only be as good as the quality of people who they house on the inside.
Wishing you so much love and baby dust 🌬🌬🌬.
xoxo,
Caryn
